Nestled in LA’s magical Laurel Canyon, Gandalf’s Bar and Grill was an ironically named tiny bookstore. Opened in 1970 and favored by many of the musicians living in the Canyon at the time, it stocked a mixture of esoteric, fantasy and critical works by the countercultures most noted authors. Many West Coast folk were mightily inspired by the mythos of JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth during the late 1960s and 70s – from the mountainous homes of the Elves, the recreational use of ‘Pipe Weed’ and most importantly the connection with nature itself – his characters became icons of the Hippie generation.
